Australian research confirms the associations between pesticides exposure and childhood brain tumors

Published in the month of April the results of an Australian research which confirms how parental exposure to pesticides - before pregnancy, during pregnacy and during childhood - increases the risk of childhood brain tumors.

Once again, scientific data warn us about the dangerous effects of pesticides on human health, exactly as on the animal one.

On March 22, the European Beekeeping Coordination and PAN Europe, together with Mr Bart Staes, MEP for the Greens, stated it in a conference organized at Bruxelles, having the same title: "Pollinator friendly farming is possible".

At the conference, a list of examples of alternative to pesticides including neonicotinoids was developed.

The key messages from the conference have been collected and published by the ARC - Agricultural and Rural Convention

The Environmental Audit Committee released a report urging the UK government to ban neonicotinoid treatments on maize, rapeseed, sunflower and cotton.

The ban has been advanced by the European Commission, based on scientific evidences showing the unacceptable role that these products plays on the bees and pollinators' decline.

The ABC adverts that we should be looking at possible links between neonicotinoid insecticides and birds, not on a farm scale, but in the context of whole watersheds and regions. It warns: "chemical contamination of the environment is already creating a crisis in human health".

In fact, in 2003, EPA "approved"  - by an incomplete and unadeguate procedure - the use of clothianidin, a neonicotinoid pesticide placed on the market in the 90s.

The “Report on water contamination due to pesticides – Edition 2013” (IT), released by the Italian High Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), sets out dramatic conclusions.

Analysis carried out in the various regions of Italy revealed pesticides’ presence in the 55,1% of surface water and in the 28,2% of ground water, up to 166 types of different pesticides – compared to the 188 types detected in 2007-2008.
