The “Report on water contamination due to pesticides – Edition 2013” (IT), released by the Italian High Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), sets out dramatic conclusions.

Analysis carried out in the various regions of Italy revealed pesticides’ presence in the 55,1% of surface water and in the 28,2% of ground water, up to 166 types of different pesticides – compared to the 188 types detected in 2007-2008.

Residues derive mainly from pesticides used in agriculture. In fact, Italian farmers apply about 350 different substances, in a quantity exceeding 140,000 tons, which is spread over crops and in the environment.

When will the social and environmental costs of “innovative agriculture” stop to be a burden to the community? When will their consequences for human health, the environment and life as a whole, be taken into account?

When will the relationship cost / benefit lead society and policy makers to reconsider the consequences of the increasing and unregulated spread of chemical over our habitats?
