The three-lobed shape of its leaf gives clover a strong symbolic value. Many artists, among others Filippo Lippi, Michelangelo, Gentile da Fabriano and Carpaccio, adopted it as a symbol of Christian charity and included it in their religious-theme paintings and frescoes.
Clover is commonly cultivated as a forage plant and to fertilise soil. Its flowers, once the bees have visited them, turn brown and bend to the ground.
